How to make the most out of your wedding photography time?

26 October 2016

Having a one hour main photography session is ideal unless you have lots of travel between locations. When couples discuss photography options with their chosen photographer, they can help to work out a timeline for the wedding day to assist with planning.

There were two ways that we could have a little more time for the main photography session at Lisa and James' wedding.

1. Sneak out of the reception for 15-20 minutes with the couple for a romantic sunset shoot or

2. Have some pre-wedding photographs taken before the ceremony, featuring a 'first look' to make it really special for the bride and groom, mirroring a 'walking down the aisle' moment for them.

Lisa and James chose to have a pre-wedding main photography session, which I'll explain a little more about later.

How did you meet?
We met over three years ago and had our first date at the GeeBung Hotel in Hawthorn. We met for dinner and got kicked out when they closed for the night!

What was the most fun part about planning a wedding?
Choosing the suits and the wedding dress was a highlight for us, and finding a wedding venue. We made a day of exploring the Yarra Valley and looking at different places.

In the morning we headed off to meet James and his groomsman for their photography session. Capturing the candid images was fun as the blokes had great difificulty getting their suits and ties organised.

Lisa spent a relaxed morning getting ready in the cottages at Wild Cattle Creek Estate, a picturesque and meticulously maintained wedding venue in the Yarra Valley.

The great thing about both Lisa and James, is their fun personalities. I don't know about you, but just looking at their images makes me smile, because they are filled with laughter and fun!

How did you find out about all of your wedding suppliers?
We chose most of our suppliers through word of mouth and tried to choose people who were local to us. We knew some already which made the planning with them much easier and we also had our venue recommend people who they had worked with before.

After photographing the ladies, we headed to one of my favourite Yarra Valley photography locations, Mont De Lancey Homestead. I like it because there are some fabulous little buildings there, stunning gardens and and some great views looking over the Yarra Valley.

We held the 'first look' in the orchard for Lisa and James. It was great to watch their expressions as James waited for Lisa to walk down the 'aisle'. Their emotions and expressions are priceless.

Here is a brilliant example of why I always work with a second photographer. Both of these images are lovely, how would one choose?

Now that you’ve had time to reflect on the wedding day, how do you feel about your decision to have a ‘first look’ and your main photography session held prior to the wedding ceremony?

We chose to have a first look because we were both a bit nervous and wanted to minimise the time we had to make people stand around for photos after the ceremony. It was one of the best decisions we made, it enabled us to see each other and spend some time together, relax with the bridal party and get some really beautiful photos at another venue without the pressure of running out of time.

I think that Lisa and James have explained all of the reasons to consider a 'first look,' even though it is a break in the tradition. Couples who have had a pre-wedding photo session have always felt very pleased they made that decision.

Here are some images taken at Mont De Lancey.

How would you describe your photography experience with Rebecca and Lauren from Bibo Photography?
So easy! Rebecca and Lauren were friendly, relaxed and very understanding on the day (it's a lot of smiling!). They were professional and made sure they captured every angle and shot we requested. We had lots of comments from guests about how lovely they were.

Finally we said 'goodbyes' and the couple split up again ready for the wedding ceremony held on the stunning grounds at Wild Cattle Creek Estate. It has the most amazing ceremony location with tiered levels for all guest to be able to get a great view of the bride and groom.

This might possibly embarrass Lisa & James, but honestly; after photographing around 200 weddings in my career, I think this is the best kissing series of photographs I've ever taken. You guys are so connected and in the moment! Congrats!

What was the most challenging part of organising a wedding?
We were very lucky and didn’t really have anything go wrong. The hardest part would be deciding on the guest list and seating people on the tables!

What memory from the wedding dates stands out as being the most special moment in terms of feeling connected as a couple?
Signing the paperwork made everything seem very real. Writing our vows was memorable, we spent a morning laughing about all the ridiculous things we could say in our vows!

The reception room at Wild Cattle Creek Estate always has a warm welcoming vibe every time I go there.

The couple organised 'selfie sticks' to be on the tables and the guests had great fun taking wedding selfies.

What advice can you give to any future brides and grooms for their wedding day?
We couldn’t get over how quickly the day went. Enjoy the lead up and don’t over think things, things will just happen for you on the day so just relax and take it all in.
